Alaska National Guard Tuition Assistance: Up to 100% at UA

If you serve in the Alaska Army or Air National Guard, the state will help pay your way through any University of Alaska campus. Federal Tuition Assistance goes on the bill first, then Alaska's state tuition assistance covers the remaining tuition balance, up to 100%. For a Guard member taking classes year round, that combination can be worth roughly $9,000 a year in tuition you never pay.

What it is

Alaska National Guard State Tuition Assistance is a state education benefit for currently serving members of the Alaska Army and Air National Guard. According to the Alaska Office of Veterans Affairs, eligible Guard members "may receive up to 100 percent tuition assistance at any University of Alaska system school." The program is run through the Alaska National Guard Education Office.

The design is a stack, not a standalone check. You apply for Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) first. FTA is the Department of Defense benefit that pays up to $250 per credit hour toward tuition, and per the University of Alaska Fairbanks veterans office, Alaska Guard members must apply for federal TA first to be eligible for state TA. Whatever tuition FTA does not cover, the state benefit fills in, up to the 100% cap at University of Alaska campuses. That includes all three universities and their community campuses:

• University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA)
• University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF)
• University of Alaska Southeast (UAS)

A reduced benefit cap applies at other eligible Alaska institutions outside the UA system. The exact cap and the list of eligible schools change with funding, so confirm current rates with the Alaska National Guard Education Office before enrolling somewhere other than UA.

This benefit pays tuition. The UAF veterans office notes that TA cannot pay course fees, while other official pages describe fee coverage differently. Before you count on fees being covered, ask the Education Office and your campus exactly what will post to your account.

What it's worth

University of Alaska resident lower-division tuition is $251 per credit for the 2026 to 2027 academic year at UAA, UAF community campuses, and UAS. FTA pays up to $250 of each credit and Alaska's state TA fills whatever is left, which means the stack can genuinely zero out your tuition at UA.

Here is a worked example for a Guard member at UAA taking 12 credits in fall and 12 in spring:

The $4,500 figure is the standard Department of Defense annual TA ceiling, listed on the Army's federal tuition assistance page; confirm your branch's current cap when you apply. Add a 12-credit summer term and the combined benefit covers roughly $9,000 in tuition for the year, which is where our estimated annual value comes from. Upper-division credits cost more ($302 per credit at UAA), so the state share grows as you advance.

Two limits to know. State TA at UA is generally capped at $250 per credit hour, and the Air Guard program caps it at 12 credits per term, subject to available funding, per UAF's published guidance. And because funding is appropriated, the Air Guard side in particular is "subject to funding availability," with bachelor's degree students paid before master's students at UAF. None of this changes the headline: for a typical resident undergraduate load at UA, the stack covers everything.

Who qualifies (and who doesn't)

You qualify if all three are true:

• You are a current member of the Alaska Army National Guard or Alaska Air National Guard.
• You are satisfactorily participating in unit training and drills.
• You are a student in good academic standing at your school.

Who does not qualify:

• Members of other states' National Guard units stationed in or moving to Alaska. The benefit follows Alaska Guard membership, not residence.
• Guard members flagged for unsatisfactory participation. Missed drills can cost you the benefit, so keep your attendance clean.
• Spouses and children. This benefit belongs to the service member. Alaska has a separate tuition waiver for dependents of service members who died in the line of duty or were POWs.
• Veterans who have left the Guard. Once you separate, look at your GI Bill options instead.

Graduate students in the Air Guard can use the benefit at UAF, but they are funded after bachelor's degree students, so plan around that if you are pursuing a master's.

How to claim it

1. Contact the Alaska National Guard Education Office before you register. They confirm your eligibility, current funding levels, and the paperwork for your branch. The state veterans office directs all tuition assistance questions there.
2. Apply for Federal Tuition Assistance first. Army Guard members request FTA through ArmyIgnitED and Air Guard members through the Air Force portal, and UAF advises registering your classes in ArmyIgnitED before the semester begins. State TA eligibility depends on having applied for federal TA first.
3. Enroll at a University of Alaska campus (or an eligible Alaska institution, knowing the reduced cap applies). Only courses that apply to your degree program can be paid with TA, per UAA's military tuition assistance page.
4. Apply for state TA through your unit's education services representative. They route your request once your federal TA is in place.
5. File the FAFSA and campus scholarship applications too. TA covers tuition, not books or housing, and the campuses recommend stacking aid on top.
6. Stay eligible every term. Satisfactory participation in the Guard and good academic standing are ongoing conditions, not a one-time check.

Deadlines

Federal TA must be requested before your classes start, so treat your course start date as the real deadline. For Alaska Air National Guard state TA at UAF, the published application windows are June 1 to August 15 for fall, November 1 to December 31 for spring, and March 1 to April 30 for summer. Windows can shift year to year, so confirm the current dates with the Education Office before you rely on them.
